It is difficult to say with certainty what is happening here. It could be a simple delay in visual development or it could be pathology within the eye or brain. It would be prudent to discuss this with your pediatrician and if advised to see a pediatric ophthalmologist. Infants at 2 months of age should definitely be fixing on a face and displaying some following.

As long as you get back on them today—should not be an issue. If you notice changes in your comfort or vision, please call or see your ophthalmologist.

"Holes" in the retina can mean several different things. A macular hole is a condition which often develops spontaneously in older patients and results in a "blind-spot" in the central vision (referred to as a scotoma). Patients with a macular hole will often require surgery which involves a vitrectomy and a gas or air bubble placement. In order to help the gas/air close the hole, patients may be instructed to keep their face down for a certain period of time after surgery (from 24 hours to 1 or 2 weeks depending on the size of the hole and the doctor's preference). Pain associated with the surgery is often minimal and can often be managed with over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol. Time off work and driving depends on the type of gas used, patient age and abilities, and doctor preference. It is best to consult with your doctor in regards to the specifics of your condition. A retinal hole or tear can occur in the periphery of the retina and may be treated with laser or freezing treatment. In addition, some peripheral holes can be observed with no treatment. Once again, your doctor should help instruct you as to whether your "hole" is that of the macular or peripheral variety and the specifics of the treatment and post-operative care.

Premature babies are at risk for developing Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) which is the abnormal growth of blood vessels in the retina. This occurs in premature infants due to the fact that the developing retina requires specific and controlled levels of oxygen to develop properly. When preterm infants are exposed to higher levels of oxygen (such as in the environment or supplemental oxygen which helps them survive), their retinal blood vessels can grow erroneously resulting in bleeding and scar tissue formation. This condition occurs with greater frequency and severity in lower birth weight babies born at a younger age. The examinations help determine if the infant is affected. In certain cases, treatment with laser can reduce or prevent the risk of blindness in these children.

Chances are that any noticeable deficit in vision that has persisted for six years is likely permanent. Lasers, even laser pointers, have potential damaging effects to the eye. Some of these effects are immediate and others can occur years after the initial insult. It is important for your nephew to see an ophthalmologist or more specifically a retina specialist (an ophthalmologist with more additional training in diseases of the retina) to ensure that he is not at risk for additional loss of vision and also to confirm that the event is actually the cause of his vision loss.

This may be as simple (and complicated) as a neuralgia affecting an eye muscle or nerve connection—akin to an old fashioned "shooting pain." Unfortunately it is hard to find the source since it is only intermittent. If& this continues, please see your ophthalmologist for evaluation.

Unfortunately, this can be seen in very nearsighted eyes and there is no known cure or preventative that we know of. The most recently approved aid is what is called an implantable telescope, which is a lens implant much like one we use for cataract surgery but is larger and has much more magnifying ability. I would seek out a retina specialist in your area that can refer her for this if he thinks that it will be helpful.

Absolutely. A pressurized cabin will have no effect either way on your eyes after dilation. Now if you are flying the plane—I would wait for the dilation to wear off!

The test itself should not make you dizzy. Dizziness is most often attributable to inner ear problems or circulation issues. If you have any more episodes, please see your regular medical doctor for a good medical evaluation

There are no published statistics on "success" rate, but we do know that the rate of complications related to tearing of the zonular support of the lens is somewhat higher in these patients. However, some of these patients exhibit no abnormal issues during surgery. The rate of blindness should be as low as with any cataract surgery as long as the surgeons knows how to handle potential complications which may require more extensive surgery. Earlier cataract surgery in these patients is always recommended by the doctors in my practice as this helps lessen complications during surgery.
